What's Happening-
Our next meeting will be
Tuesday, October 6th at The Modern Restaurant. With fall
coming on it is time to go inside for our meetings and for dinner. And now you
are on your own for the bill, unfortunately. On behalf of the Club, I would like
to thank Neal and Joyce for their wonderful hospitality by opening up their home
to us for our meetings throughout the summer months. That is a big task to take
on and you make it seem so easy. THANKS, NEAL AND JOYCE!!! Come
at 6pm if you want to have dinner with friends, the meeting will be at 7pm.
So
the 2009 cruising and car show season is coming to a close. It has been a long,
hot, eventful summer. We have had many car shows and the weather has been great
all summer long. I can barely remember the last time we got any significant
rain. I'm sure that is coming in due time, however. I just hope we don't have a
repeat of the snow we had last year. That was not fun. This past month has kept
a lot of us pretty busy. We had the parade in which our club won 1st
place amongst the car club entries. I hope there is room on one of the shelves
at NAPA. After that was Wheelin' WW Weekend where several of our members won
awards for their rides. It seemed to me that we took home more awards this year
than ever before, but I could be imagining things, too.
J
I do that from time to time. It's nice to support our local events like this,
even though this particular car show costs a bit more than all of the others. I
figure what I paid in a higher entry fee was what I would have had to spend in
fuel to go to an out of town show anyway so I guess we break even in the long
run. Heck, it's probably still cheaper than the fuel costs to drive out of town
for most of us! Also on that same weekend was a car show in Palouse. I know a
handful of members went there instead, but I haven't heard how it was or any
results. If you have heard something, bring it up at the meeting.
October brings our season to an end. Next week we have Oktoberfest in Athena! It
was confirmed today when we were at the Longbranch. The person in charge of
that was waiting for us and he gave his info to Maggie and it is posted on the
web page. This will be on Saturday, October 3rd. On Sunday, October 4th
is the Mustang car show in Paterson at Columbia Crest Winery. If you haven't
been to this one, you should try. It is an awesome venue for a car show and as
most of you know they have an SOB category so non-Fords and non-Mustangs can
enter as well.
On
October 11th we have been asked to attend a shindig at Wheatland
Village. They are calling it Streets of Dreams. This will be a 2 hour event
from 2-4pm. Street Rods and older vehicles have been asked to attend. Wheatland
Village is putting an ad out about this event. They have also asked if it would
be OK if the residents could go for a ride in the cars just around in the
parking lot which circles around Wheatland Village. This is a voluntary point so
it is up to you if you wish to do this. Let's hope we have nice weather. And
at the same time you can check out Wheatland Village.
That's it from me this month. Hope to see ya at the meeting at The Modern!
Presidential Quips-
Howdy!
Cruisers!
Fall
is here and things are winding down for the season. Keep in mind that if there
are nice days, you might want to check your email on days after our cruises have
completed. It is nice to get a car out on a nice crisp day and take a midday
cruise around the counties.
We had
a great time at the Walla Walla Fair Parade. Katerina aka Kat and Keanu led our
group by carrying our banner in the parade. Thanks! We received a blue ribbon
for our efforts. A couple of us came up with a plan to get us in front of the
horses next year. If you are around Dave Piper or Maggie sometime, ask us the
plan for the cars and horses.
We
have a few events that are not on the paper cruise schedule coming up. October
3rd there is a cute little show that runs from 10-3. People
interested in attending the Athena Octoberfest on Oct. 3rd will LEAVE
M-F Dollar Store at 9:40 am. (Dave and I might be out of town that day). They
have 4 awards, 1st 2nd and 3rd and Most Likely
to be Towed.
Wednesday, November 11th we have been asked to participate in the
Veteran's Day Parade. We are invited to have breakfast at the VFW 7-9 am. We
will stage for this parade at 6th and Main Streets and continue up to
Palouse. This parade will begin promptly at 11 am. Bring your flags to
decorate your car and support our troops. Lunch is also served after the parade
and we are again invited at no cost. Dinner is provided for anyone beginning at
5 pm for the cost of $8.00. Last year we drove in the rain and there were
people there to watch us. I look at it this way...the men and women who served
in the armed forces before and those who serve currently don't get to stay
inside when it rains. Get your boots and join us in this parade.
If you
have a convertible and have NOT contacted Pattie Eagon, please do so. Wa-Hi has
asked us to locate people who would like to assist with Homecoming this year.
The date is October 16th the time is approx. 7 pm. If you can help
out please call Pattie 525-6908
Ideas
for donations from the club. Last year we were able to donate money $2200 to
worthy causes in the Walla Walla Valley.

Whalen's World-
LEAVING A LINE OF RUBBER IN THE STREET; Spinning your tires didn't always depend
on what you had under the hood. A 1949 Studebaker with a flat head six and bald
tires could spin the tires in Seattle after it rained.
Most of us in high school didn't buy bald tires so we could spin our tires. The
going rate of pay for a part time job during the early 50's was anywhere from 75
cents an hour to $1.25 an hour. I was a box boy in high school making $1.25 an
hour and I would clear $20.00 a week. A new tire on sale at Sears would cost
$22.00 to $25.00; a cheap tire from a junk yard cost you $2.50. A good tire that
had some signs of tread would cost $5.00; I usually purchased $5.00 tires.
There were some draw backs running with bald tires; if you hit your brakes hard
you would slide forward on dry or wet pavement. There were a couple of times I
had to do a panic stop and ended up sideways in the street because I had to turn
the steering wheel to avoid hitting the car in front of me.
Denny and I pulled the flat head six out of Denny's 1948 Plymouth and installed
an Olds rocket 88 V-8 with a band new clutch and pressure plate. Denny could
smoke the ($5.00) tires in all three gears.
One night I was riding with Denny and he had his foot into it in second gear and
we were going sideways down the street in front of Zesto's smoking the tires;
when suddenly there was a loud bang! The heat from the smoking tires got to the
inner-tube and it exploded shredding the right rear tire; all the guys hanging
out at Zesto's were laughing at us as Denny pulled the car over to the curb. Not
cool...
